Annatto, Lipstick tree - Bixa Orellano
This is what the Mexican achiote paste is made from.
These are our first blossoms from seeds I got from a friend 4 or 5 years ago. I’m excited to try out dyeing soon with this brilliant red that is used as a natural dye in many foods including cheddar cheese (to appear as though the cows were eating grass rather than hay - sunshine is orange after all.) Delightful flowers and seedpods on this fun edible and dye plant.
