Devil's Trumpet - Datura metel

Datura is a beautiful desert flower. It has a history of medicinal use although it is borderline poison so please do not use any datura plants without significant knowledge.
My understanding is that this species was found significantly cultivated in India dha-dhur-a (from which the genus gets its name). Interestingly, my sense is that the fact that botanists believe this plant was cultivated over over many generations prior to arriving in India (no known pre-cultivar) in the 4th century; consequently, there is strong belief that the plant was cultivated in the Americas and then this “finished product” made its way east across the Atlantic well before Columbus.
