Hoja Santa - Piper auritum
Nicknamed the root beer plant, this wonderful water loving spreader thrives anywhere where there is water and it yields an edible tender leaf that I love with my beans.
The local population uses hoja santa to wrap fish or cheese and bake to impart the delicious safrole.
Of course, safrole is “carcinogenic” but hey what isn’t when you distill, extract and inject high volumes into mice.
In moderation, I feel completely safe eating this as an edible green that imparts delightful saffrole flavor into my cuisine.
This plant is a close relative to both pepper and kave.
An angiosperm that is neither a monocot or a dicot.
