Sugar Cane - Saccharum spp.
As you can see from the genus name, this is the plant of sweetness.
Unfortunately, this is a fairly water intensive plant, so I don’t grow much of it. And, for the sake of diversity and a little natural sweetness in the yard, I like to have 1 or 2 around at any given point.
Very easy to propagate as each segment of this grass can shoot new roots by making cuttings or simply letting a mature one fall onto the ground.
Todos Santos did have some water issues back in the 1950s when sugarcane industry was attempted here. Luckily we don’t grow as many heavily intensive water crops anymore in this area; however, we can stay mindful of how much water a crop takes and then whether our plants are returning that water to their ecosystme of being flown off to the USA or Canada in the form of tomatoes or strawberries exporting our Baja water for US currency.
